Dental crowns have a number of uses in dentistry, from restoring teeth to supporting bridges and protecting a tooth after root canal treatment. The most common reason you might need a crown, though, is to restore a tooth with more decay than can be repaired with a dental filling.

A dental crown allows us to save your natural tooth by removing only the damaged or decayed areas and leaving the healthy structure intact. A crown restores function, strength, and appearance by covering and protecting what remains of your original tooth.

Dental Crown Process

When you need a dental crown to repair a tooth with decay or damage, the first step is to take a digital impression, which allows us to create an accurate model of your teeth and bite. With this model, we can design a restoration that looks and functions exactly like your original tooth.

Your tooth is prepared for your crown by removing all damaged or decayed areas. There’s no discomfort involved, since local anesthetic is used to numb the area. Another x-ray is taken at this point to make sure your crown fits securely onto the contours of your prepared tooth. Once your crown is ready, it will be bonded in place.

Types of Dental Crowns

There are four main types of dental crowns. These include:

Ceramic

These crowns are highly realistic, making them excellent for restoring teeth near the front of the mouth. We offer same-day CEREC crowns for your convenience.

Porcelain Fused to Metal

This type of crown combines the strength of metal crowns with the aesthetics of ceramic.

Gold Alloys

Gold alloys are the most durable option for dental crowns. Patients who grind their teeth during sleep may want to choose a gold alloy crown, particularly for molars that won’t be seen when they smile.

Base Metal Alloys

Base metal alloy is corrosion-resistant and strong. When there isn’t enough tooth structure to support other types of restorations, this type of crown may be recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

How long do dental crowns last?

Your dental crown’s lifespan is determined by its position in your mouth, your oral habits, and the material used. That said, most crowns last between five and 15 years. It’s not unusual for them to survive considerably longer, though, with good oral hygiene and dental checkups every six months.

Is it painful to have a crown put on your tooth?

No, getting a dental crown is not painful, although you may experience some sensitivity afterwards. Local anesthetic will be used to numb your tooth and the surrounding tissue during your procedure.

Are crowns worth it?

Yes, dental crowns are well-worth the investment. If extracting your tooth is the only other option available to you, dental crowns are a better choice because preserving your natural tooth results in better oral health and a lower risk of jawbone loss.

Does a dental crown look natural?

If you’re looking for a realistic crown option, we recommend ceramic crowns. They blend in seamlessly with the rest of your smile.

Which crown is best for back teeth?

A gold or base metal alloy crown is best if aesthetics aren’t a concern or if you have a history of bruxism (teeth grinding). Otherwise, a CEREC crown offers both strength and aesthetics.
